Community Radio is one of my other loves, like an alter ego where I can perform without having to directly face the audience and where they can turn me off without hurting my feelings. And in Yeppoon Community Radio is Radio NAG (NAG is an acronym of Nick, Andre and Graeme, the guys who pioneered it in Yeppoon ten years ago).
NAG is not your local straight and narrow Christian station but rather reflects our community, the whole good, bad (and occassionally ugly) mixture of our society. It’s fairly ‘alternative’ – and that’s why I like it. I first got involved about six years back, starting as a breakfast presenter with ‘The Good Breakfast’ and progressing through the ‘The God Show’ on a Sunday afternoon and finally a groovy late night show called ‘Nite Light’. Then I ran out of steam and canned it for a few years while I concentrated on other things.
Last year, however, I decided I needed to get out of my Christian clique and pick up some not-so-Christian acquaintances again. “Where better to do that but NAG?”, I said. And what better name for a faith based community radio show than ‘Backyard Believers’. In fact one of the other presenters suggested I use The Monkees’ hit ’Daydream Believer’ as my theme tune. I just wasn’t sure how “… and a homecoming queen” would fit into the image!
My show goes to air most Sunday mornings from 11am to noon. If I’m not on my Kiwi mate Graham is at the controls (or we’re on together, which is alot of fun). If you’re on the Capricorn Coast tune in and enjoy.
